Pressure mounts on Webber most of all

Mark Webber, typically, cut to the chase when weighing up what could be the weekend of his life with a colleague.

"It's simple, mate," he said. "Put it on pole, then disappear!"

As long as Fernando Alonso, the championship leader, finishes third or worse behind the Australian in Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, it would be that simple.

Webber would be champion, with no need for a last-lap shuffle from team-mate Sebastian Vettel, and Red Bull would have completed a deserved double entirely in keeping with chief technical officer Adrian Newey's magnificent RB6 design.

But little in this switchback season has been straightforward - particularly at Red Bull, where Vettel could have wrapped up the title some races ago had he had greater reliability.

Instead, he and his older team-mate find themselves chasing Alonso who, remember, was 47 points off the lead following the British Grand Prix in July.

"All the pressure is on Red Bull this weekend," according to one team manager with recent championship success. "And the biggest load is on Webber.

"He's not a young driver and you don't get many chances like this. Vettel will have many more days to challenge for the title. The team clearly back him."

"As for Fernando, he's been there already - twice."

Webber's outburst about his team's lack of driver equality before the last race in Brazil was interpreted by many as evidence that he's feeling the heat.

And those same observers viewed his quiet, reserved performance here in front of the world's media alongside his three rivals as another display of nerves.

Contrast his demeanour with Vettel's front row smiles, they were saying last night.

Consider Alonso's matter-of-fact handling of any barbed team orders related probing and Hamilton's back row cheeriness: "The guys in front of me have everything to lose, so for me I'm going to be flat out as always."

Hamilton's role could be a significant curve-ball if he can repeat his pole-winning lap of last year. But let's stay with Webber for the moment.

A one-time Jaguar official who worked with the Australian at the team and still works within Formula 1 gave me an interesting slant on his comments in Brazil.

"Mark seems to need to rev himself up, needs to feel he's got to fight something," my source said.

"He's a strong character and a good driver but for some reason he doesn't always show it unless he's gets himself wound up."

Red Bull's Mark Webber

Will Webber keep his nerve in Abu Dhabi? Photo: Getty Images

His race-winning performance at Silverstone was a case in point. Vettel got the only new, surviving front wing off Webber's car before qualifying.

The Aussie got the hump. But he also got the victory - fast and furious to the end.
That was in the middle of his purple patch which continued until the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of August, when he was second to Hamilton.

Webber has not been on pole since then, and has not won a race since Hungary, the grand prix before Spa. He has been out-qualified by his team-mate at the last five events.

He lost valuable points by crashing in Korea, where he also lost the lead in the championship - which he had held for the longest period of anyone this season - to the driver he rates the strongest on the grid, Alonso.

So it is easy to see why so many in the F1 paddock believe Webber faces the greatest challenge of all the contenders this weekend to fulfil an ambition that's been losing momentum at the wrong time.

Essentially, it's now or never.

Even Webber admitted on Thursday that age is against him to enjoy more opportunities like this.

Indeed, one leading driver manager even suggested to me that, whatever happened this weekend, Webber's position at Red Bull was untenable.

"If he's champion, he should get out at the top. If he doesn't win the title, then why would he want to be in a team where he feels his team-mate is being treated differently?" he said.

By contrast, the Alonso Fan Club nodded sagely at the Spaniard's cool fatalism yesterday.

"I will not have anything to be disappointed about in 2010," Alonso said.

"This first year of the relationship we are fighting for the world championship in the last race against two Red Bulls who are dominating by far in terms of speed so overall I don't think it matters on Sunday."

Um, really?

Make no mistake, Alonso and Ferrari will be going all out to win the title on Sunday, however much they make out it would be an unexpected bonus.

But this chance has been as much to do with Red Bull's fallibility as Ferrari's remarkable recovery from a desperate mid-season slump which was threatening to turn the screw on team principal Stefano Domenicali.

If anybody can drive to a title-winning script on Sunday to join a select club including previous three time winners like Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda and Sir Jackie Stewart, it is Alonso.

He is the man in front, with the experience of his 2005 and 2006 triumphs, seemingly able to work out the points as effortlessly as the strategy.

Above all, he knows that his rivals all have to beat him on the track to have a chance of the 2010 championship, whereas he could do the job even if he failed to finish through a mistake or a breakdown.

Vettel, who must have nightmares about that engine failure when leading in Korea, has appeared like a man who will be driving more in hope than expectation of coming first or second to have any chance of becoming F1's youngest champion.

The prospect of waving through Webber has not fazed him because both of them know their first priority is getting ahead, and staying ahead of Alonso before any switch comes into the equation.

And that is where Lewis Hamilton fits in.

He accepts that he is clearly the outsider of the four contenders; 24 points off the lead, he's all but written off his chances

But if the McLaren performs like last year - extra straight-line speed from the F-duct instead of last year's Kers power boost - on Abu Dhabi's two big straights, the 2008 champion could be the joker in the championship pack.

Hamilton gave a hint of what might be in the offing with his pace in second practice, especially in the final sector where he was supreme.

Another McLaren pole position backed up by race reliability, and those carefully prepared championship permutations at Red Bull and Ferrari will be crucial props in a juggling act which could keep us guessing until the final lap of the final race of this momentous season.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian as his 80th birthday approaches, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone speak out about a variety of subjects, from the future of the sport to Margaret Thatcher, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, democracy, football and what continues to drive him.
The way I feel at the moment, why stop? I do it because I enjoy it. And yesterday is gone. I don't care what happened yesterday. What else would I do? People retire to die. I don't get any individual pleasure because we don't win races or titles in this job. I'm like most business people. You look back at the end of the year and you see what you've achieved by working out how much money the company has made. That's it.

F1: Australian GP dispute resolved

Australian GP dispute resolved By Matt Beer Sunday, December 5th 2010, 06:48 GMT Australia's motorsport governing body CAMS says it has reached an agreement to end its dispute with the Melbourne race organisers, ensuring that next year's Australian Grand Prix can go ahead. The race had been in doubt after a disagreement over fees between CAMS - which helps organise the event - and the Australian GP promoters, with the latter keen for CAMS to lower its charges. But a statement from CAMS said a satisfactory financial deal had now been achieved. Related posts:

Canadian GP: Vettel fastest in second practice as tyre degrade

Sebastian Vettel topped the time sheets for Red Bull at the second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso set the second fastest time for Ferrari after managing only 7th in the morning session. His team mate Felipe Massa finished a strong fifth after setting 12th fastest time in the first practice session.

Mercedes showed superb pace as Nico Rosberg set the third fastest time, while Michael Schumacher was second in the morning session.

Some drivers improved their lap times on the super-soft tyres, but had trouble making the super-soft tyres last. Most of the drivers struggled with the super-soft tyres, which seemed to grain a lot faster. Comments on F1Fanatic suggest that the option tyres were graining too badly.

The tyres available for the weekend are medium (prime) and super-soft (option). Because of serious tyre graining, qualifying and race could be bit more interesting, with the top ten qualifiers having to start the race with the same set of tyres which they qualified on.

McLaren reserve driver Gary Paffet observed, ?With all the tyre graining issues people are having, we might see our first two-stop race of the season on Sunday.?

Once again Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus was the fastest of the new team drivers in 19th and Hispania?s Karun Chandhok continued his impressive run to finish 20th, ahead of his team mate Bruno Senna and the Virgins of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi. Jarno Trulli could only manage to complete 11 laps due to electrical problems on his Lotus.

Question about Stock Colors of 1969 Dodge Daytona

I am taking a break from my usual genre of building (fire and police equipment) to build the reissue of the MPC 1969 Dodge Daytona.  I was wondering what were the stock interior/exterior combinations that this car came with?

I am considering either Hemi orange, or a metallic blue.  But unsure what to do with interiors.  Suggestions are welcome.

Judgement day looms for Ferrari

Could Alonso be stripped of his German Grand Prix win? © Getty Images
Ferrari?s team-orders hearing in front of the FIA?s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) is looming and opinions on what the punishment should be vary from championship disqualification to a mere slap on the wrist. The likelihood is that it?ll be something in between. In his latest column, the Daily Telegraph?s Tom Cary looks into the absurdity of the team orders rule and the punishment that should be handed down for breaking it.
?With Alonso trailing Lewis Hamilton by 41 points after failing to score in Spa last time out, perhaps the powers-that-be would prefer not to dock him a further 25 points and, in all likelihood, remove him from the championship race. A deduction of the team points accrued in Germany and a suspended ban is considered more likely.?
Richard Williams of the Guardian said the only sensible thing to do would be to abolish the unworkable team orders rule that flew in the face of over 100 years of motorsport history.
"Proceedings could be dominated by Formula One's usual political machinations, or by an outbreak of common sense. The latter would see Mosley's unworkable law being erased as swiftly as it was so foolishly imposed."
Meanwhile, 1996 champion Damon Hill has told the Daily Telegraph that he thought the WMSC would be unwise to strip Alonso of his points entirely.
"Flexing their muscles because they can is not necessarily wise. I don't think a punishment that big would fit this particular crime."

Nissan GTR 650 by Hennessey

Hennessey has already created what was once the fastest Nissan GT-R in the world, but not everyone can handle 800 kicking horses in one sports car. So, for those with not enough gusto to handle the beast, but who are not satisfied with the tame 473 HP found in the standard GT-R, Hennessey has a package for you. It is called the GTR650, and the name pretty much says it all.

Thanks to a new stainless steel mid pipe exhaust, a new induction system, a modified boost controller, and new intercoolers, the 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6 engine delivers an impressive 662 HP at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 638 lb-ft Torque at 4,100 rpm. Unfortunately, there was no mention as to how this boost affected the performance of the sports car, but we are going to state the obvious when we say it will probably be faster than the standard, but slower than the 800hp modded GT-R. Next to the engine upgrade, Hennessey is also offering a transmission clutch pack upgrade.

In order to handle this amount of power, the GTR650 package needed to include new, improved suspensions and new sport brakes. A few different carbon fiber aerodynamic components, a new set of wheels, and performance tires were also added to complete the look and feel of the Nissan GT-R.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The 5,500 units of the 2011 Shelby GT500 (pictured above) are already sold out, so Mustang lovers best just move on to the next offering from the American automaker; it’s time to start talking about the 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. We may not have any official details on it just yet, but the power of the Internet, and an untrustworthy auto employee, strike again with a leaked document revealing details on the 2012 model’s ordering guide. Guess that means the GT500’s heart will beat for at least one more year.

Nothing much is going to change for the 2012 model considering the Mustang was just given a little refresh for 2011. It will still see its usual coupe and convertible versions, with prices starting from $49,495 and $54,495 respectively. The list of new options only includes new Recaro leather sports seats, a glass roof, and two new packages.

Under the hood there will be the same aluminum 5.4 Liter supercharged V8, derived from the unit inside the Ford GT super car, that produces 550 HP and 510 lb-ft of torque.

It may still be packing the same gear as the last model, but who really cares? The 2012 Ford Mustang GT500 will probably still sell out just as quickly as the 2011 model did.

Hit the jump to read more about the 2012 Ford Mustang GT500.

Ferrari adopts Red Bull-style exhaust for Valencia

Ferrari's B version of the F10 will reportedly feature a Red Bull-style exhaust system at Valencia. The information appeared in Spain's AS newspaper, whose reporters believe ? from Ferrari sources ? that the heavily restyled car will be from 0.3 to 0.4 seconds quicker per lap as compared to the recent races in Turkey and Canada.

According to the same report, the updated Ferrari challenger will feature a modified rear suspension as well, in order to better integrate the new exhausts. The new layout is expected to open a bigger channel of air ?to double the downforce generated by the diffuser,? as reported by the GMM news agency, quoting AS.

Here is a picture of the Red Bull during the pre-season testing. The exhaust vents to the outer side of the gearbox below the bottom suspension wishbone, channelling the hot air around the rear suspension and out the top side of the floor. The Red arrow shows Red Bull's attempt to mislead rival teams by placing a sticker of an exhaust pipe on the upper bodywork below the upper wishbone, where one would expect to see it!

Ferrari have been preparing for the Valencia update for quite some time now, having lost a lot of time developing the F-duct system until now. This was actually the main reason why their car has become less competitive as compared to the championship front-runners, as argued by team boss Stefano Domenicali himself.

?For Valencia, the focus has been on other areas of the car apart from the (F-duct) rear wing,? said the Ferrari principal, according to Brazil's Globo. His comment was strengthened by Alonso's outspoken belief that the revised package for Valencia will set the base for a whole new perspective for Ferrari for the rest of the 2010 season.

?The most important improvement in Valencia is not what we achieve there, but the way it opens us developments to be stronger for the remainder of the season,? said Alonso.

At Ferrari?s own Fiorano test circuit on Friday (18th June), Fernando Alonso drove the F10 for the ?promotional and filming? reasons as permitted by the test ban.

But, as confirmed by Italian media sources, the 2010 car was in its full Valencia specification, including Red Bull-style low exhausts, designed to channel more air to the double-diffuser.

?You have to make the most of any opportunity in this era of the testing ban,? the Italian team said.

A 14 seconds video below, with Alonso testing the F10b in Fiorano was leaked on Youtube and f1around.files.wordpress.com compiled the image and compared it beautifully with that of Ferrari F10 and Red Bull RB6 as seen above.
